KUCHING: Kuching city must have a modern public transport to serve the city people and those in the greater part of the city befitting its status as a modern city, the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg said here, today.
A modern public transportation system is the hall mark of a modern city that Kuching city must have, he said when speaking to officiate at the 34th Kuching City Commemoration Day at Kuching City South Hall (MBKS).
He reiterated that in tandem with the goal towards zero emission, the ART would be powered by hydrogen.
Kuching city through Sarawak Metro, a subsidiary of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is working towards the development of an Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART)
The first phase of the billion-ringgit Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project scheduled to start in September is also aimed at easing traffic congestions in the city and surrounding areas.
Sarawak Metro has recently awarded its System Package 1 Contract for the KUTS to the contractor involving a contract sum of RM1.425 billion.
The contract is for the supply of rolling stock consisting of hydrogen-powered autonomous rapid transit (ART) vehicles, depot equipment and maintenance vehicles, signalling and control system and automatic platform gates.
The project consisting of 52.6 kilometres of routes shall see the line extending to Kota Samarahan and is expected to be operational in 2025.
Sarawak Metro has also signed MOUs with two local companies, Naim Holdings Bhd and Ibraco Bhd to pave the way for collaborations on the implementation and management of the KUTS.
Among those present were Deputy Premier, Professor Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian, deputy ministers and Mayor Kuching City North (DBKU), Datu Haji Junaidi bin Haji Reduan.
Earlier, the Mayor of MBKS Dato Wee Hong Seng also spoke.
